The Trussell Trust runs the largest network of foodbanks in the UK, giving emergency food and support to people in crisis. Thirteen million people live below the poverty line and in the last year we gave 1,332,952 three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis.
We invited local schools to provide weekly foodbank vouchers to families who would normally get free school meals during term time and might suffer particular hardship during the holidays. This led to increased families visiting over the summer – with colouring and nail painting available to occupy the children whilst parents collected their food.
EFB also provided food and volunteers to help with Beacon Community Centre’s summer holiday club, providing and serving a cooked meal for up to 40 children and their parents. The club included organised activities with FabLab, Love Local Food, Active Exeter and a Disco, with the aim of giving local families with limited resources a chance to get together and have fun!
